1U Power Supply to power Pi and Hard Drives

Tue Feb 04, 2014 11:17 am

I currently have a Raspberry Pi setup with 2 USB Harddrives running Samba. I am looking at putting everything inside of a 1U Rackmount Case.

I am wondering how to power everything, instead of using 3 wall warts, am I better off using something like this 200w 1U ATX PSU?

This looks like it would supply the 5v for the Pi and the 12v needed for the Hard Drives....

Any thoughts, disadvantages?

in the past for various things

The only disadvantage is that it is a little ugly. The fan will be noisy too. You will have to add some jumpers to make it turn on, but it will work fine. I would fuse that 5 volt@21 amp output at something like 10 amps or less.

It will be going into a data cabinet so the fan noise won't be a problem :)

I had heard talk of ATX power supplies not being stable at low loads but I guess with the two Hard Drives being connected that might be less of an issue?

My other concern was power consumption

some ATX PSU need a load on 12V to work - the HD should be good enough .....
YMMV

I have not seen that. Any supply that is unstable at no load gets thrown in the trash here. It means that either the supply is on it's way out or it is a crap design. In either case, it gets tossed. I have a 40amp Dell supply that is stable from 0 load to full load.
