Raspberry Pi as a media player

Considering buy a Pi to use as a media player for the kids bed room.

but I only want it to read from my network drive via wifi and not access the internet. is this possible?

if so how?

Yes, you can disable internet on a pi, but how you do that will depend on what distribution you decide to install.

Also, you might have to reconfigure the network itself. How to arrange what you want will depend on what the other devices are, for detailed advice, it would help to post more information about your current setup and operating system(s). It sounds more like a question about how to configure your network, independent of the Pi, as to permissions.

My current setup is a Mac mini server. Which is also running itunes to send 'our' media to the tv (controlled via the remote app). So the. Kids do not have access to the older films.

I would like to setup the raspberry pi as a media player for the kids (in the bedroom) linked to one of the drives on my server via wifi. But I don't want the ip to be connected to the outside world. Just the network drive.

I have 2 hubs. An old netgear wifi hub used mainly as a switch. I have the kids on the wifi from this. I also have an AirPort Extreme which is the main router.
