Post NOOBS install no video

Wed Jan 29, 2014 10:30 am

I, too, have no video after successfully installing Raspbian from NOOBS. The green ACT light is flashing away so I'm pretty sure there's some good stuff going on...just can't see any of it.

I'm using an old TV set with a yellow RCA cable. I tested this set up successfully with the Raspbian distro before NOOBS came out. I'm using the same SD Card which I reformatted. I've repeated the process several times and took pains to follow the directions exactly. Heeeeeeeelp!

It's a bug, NOOBS can sometimes install software with HDMI enabled even if you're using composite video.

You could try accessing the boot menu buy holding the left shift as soon as the Pi is switched on, then press 3 for PAL or 4 for NTSC.
From the NOOBS menu you can edit the boot configuration file to comment out (with #) the HDMI stuff and add sdtv_mode=1 or sdtv_mode=2
Alternatively you could boot with a working copy of Raspbian or another Linux machine, put the faulty card in a memory card reader, mount the Raspbian partition sda3 sda4 sda5 sda6 sda7 (depending on your card) locate the config.txt file and edit it.

NOOBS is "somewhat tricky" with composite video since it presumes most uses will be using HDMI (and always defaults to that video mode). If you're using a wireless keyboard (or any other keyboard that's "slow to detect") on first-boot it's possible to miss the "time window" within which a keypress of '3' or '4' can be detected. This results in some green led ACTivity whilst NOOBS performs some SDHC card partition re-organisation. After several minutes (which may depend on SDHC card size) when green led ACTivity ceases then NOOBS should now detect the keypress/toggle correctly. (More info. on what you should see can be found here: http://www.cpmspectrepi.webspace.virgin ... ellow.html)
Alternatively it is possible to edit recovery.cmdline to force NOOBS to use composite video as discussed in the "Advanced Usage (for experts and teachers)" section of the NOOBS documentation (https://github.com/raspberrypi/noobs/bl ... /README.md)

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

I think it's rather important to fix this bug. I installed Raspbian via NOOBS where I didn't have wired Internet so I couldn't use NOOBS Lite and I also only had a PAL-monitor (a portable DVD-player with video-in). Installation went well but after clicking some button to reboot the screen went black and never came back on. I tried 3 for PAL but it didn't help. Then I restarted. I think it eventually came to raspi-config. The disadvantage with going to raspi-config is that Caps-Lock doesn't work there so there is no way to check if your keyboard works. Maybe it should be possible to restart using PAL from raspi-config too and caps-lock should work in raspi-config. I then edited /boot/config.txt on another computer and then PAL worked. But if I didn't have another computer it would be difficult to get it working if one just uses NOOBS.
Have Pi0&1A&1B&1B+&2B&3B&4B w/ Raspbian. Started w/ BASIC on ABC80&ZX81 then Forth, Z80… https://scratch.mit.edu/users/mobluse/ https://github.com/mobluse/ https://twitter.com/mobluse/ https://YouTube.com/MOBiL4u/

It's been logged, together with related bugs and, AIUI, scheduled to be "fixed" in the next release.
