I'm using an old TV set with a yellow RCA cable. I tested this set up successfully with the Raspbian distro before NOOBS came out. I'm using the same SD Card which I reformatted. I've repeated the process several times and took pains to follow the directions exactly. Heeeeeeeelp!
NOOBS is "somewhat tricky" with composite video since it presumes most uses will be using HDMI (and always defaults to that video mode). If you're using a wireless keyboard (or any other keyboard that's "slow to detect") on first-boot it's possible to miss the "time window" within which a keypress of '3' or '4' can be detected. This results in some green led ACTivity whilst NOOBS performs some SDHC card partition re-organisation. After several minutes (which may depend on SDHC card size) when green led ACTivity ceases then NOOBS should now detect the keypress/toggle correctly. (More info. on what you should see can be found here:

Alternatively it is possible to edit
recovery.cmdline to force NOOBS to use composite video as discussed in the "Advanced Usage (for experts and teachers)" section of the NOOBS documentation (

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm
