Best AirPlay Solution / My WiFi challenges....

Fri Jan 17, 2014 2:41 pm

Hello everyone,

I want to turn my Pi into a dedicated (analog) AirPort service.

I was using Raspbmc, but never got AirPlay to work (recently or 6+ months ago)... I just really got a hum, even if I did an rpi-update.

Anyway - so I installed Raspbian. Other than the fact it does not include rpi-update and the CA certs necessary to make it work, it was pretty painless to get Shairport running.

It was all going great - until I tried to get both my wired network adapater plus my Edimax wireless adapter working (WAP2, static-ip, non-broadcast SSID). I was actually able to get the wireless working but after literally a whole day of trying, I could never get it so that both or either eth0 or wlan0 would properly work. (so that I could use it remotely wirelessly but move it back to wired without having to touch a thing)

It was an extraordinarily frustrating day :) I then figured I'd start from scratch, re-imaged my flash card, stayed away from tools I didn't think I'd need (wicd I think?) as I had properly (in my mind) configured my interfaces file with the encryption key, the SSID scan line, etc... Still couldn't get it to work.

I am coming to the point I may be willing to just swear off the eth0 port and try to get wifi working by itself... Or even use wpa_supplicant even though I don't believe it is really needed?

Anyway - I was hoping for some general advice here... If there is a better platform than Raspbian to get both interfaces working well - with my desired wifi connectivity (WPA2, static-ip, non-broadcast SSID)

Thanks :)

I'd probably go with using Raspbian and this http://adf.ly/cMSnU. I'd just get a fresh install of Raspbian and follow the guide. To make your pi louder use this to make it louder without distortion enter this into the terminal

Code: Select all

amixer set PCM 2dB

Return to “Networking and servers”
