turn off the raspberry

I have connect my raspberry to the usb output of my tv.
raspberry with xbmc

If i turn off the tv, the raspsberry turns off automaticaly, if i start the tv again,
raspberry says that i turned off not good.

If i turned xbmc off, the raspberry restart automaticaly.

How can i turn off the raspberry correctly

so the option in xbmc to switch of actually resets your RPI ?

I'm pretty sure XBMC has options to either restart or shutdown; my Windows version does, anyways.
