rpi help needed

hi i have set up my rpi correctly and a friend of mine put xbmc/fusion onto the memory card for me
i have switched on the rpi it starts to setup xbmc then it will say that it cannot connect to internet although i have connected it to my router via a inthernet lead
please could someone help
