Raspberry Pi Cuts Off

Fri Dec 13, 2013 10:14 pm

Hello,
I was wondering if you guys could help troubleshoot one of my Pis. To put it simply, it randomly cuts off. It doesn't shut down, as in peacefully closing all of the processes and turning it off, but rather cuts off abruptly as if it were unplugged. I have tested and replaced all of the following:
All USB devices (powered USB hub, Logitech keyboard/mouse combo, wifi adapter, flash drive (for RaspBMC))
SD cards (installed different OSes on different cards as well, including RaspBMC and Raspbian)
Power supply and cables
HDMI cable
I have tested all above components on a different Pi that I bought as a replacement and there are no issues of the sort.
The faulty Pi cuts off randomly, so there is no pattern or way to replicate the issue. I don't think it is a matter of heat since this issue could happen while it is booting, or it could happen in a few hours after running. It is not overclocked from the settings, and not modified physically in any way. The issue reminds me of an Xbox 360 RROD, and I suspect it may have a hairline fracture somewhere in the solder, since it is lead-free. Would there be any way to check for this?
Note: I cannot return this, since for one, it was a Christmas present last year from my grandmother, so I do not have any of the purchase info, and this issue began happening months after the return policy would have expired.
Thank you much in advanced for your time and help!

sounds like your polyfuse is on the brink, maybe a few days rest will do it good.

Mahjongg,
I do recall reading that tip from somewhere and have left it alone anywhere from days to, most recently, a few months. Same results.

Mahjong will most likely freak over this but if there's no warranty try baking it in the oven to reflow the solder joints, do a google search for details. Also here http://www.raspberrypi.org/phpBB3/searc ... sf=msgonly

I routinely re-bake PCB's in the solder oven, nothing to fret over!
But its a real PCB infra-red re-flow oven, not a Pizza oven!
do not heat them over say 270 degrees (celcius), and no longer than a few minutes!

I remember baking 2708 EEPROM's in a normal oven so that they could be re-programmed again, as after a few cycles bits got stuck during ultraviolet light erasing, and heating them proved a way to resuscitate them.
