Physical storage for server Pi

Wed Dec 11, 2013 10:52 pm

This is sort of a beginner-level question, so I'll put it in here...!

I'm thinking of using my second Pi as a little server to run from home, just to host my (regrettably low-traffic) site, images and so on. I don't think I'd need more than about 32GB of space ever, but know that SD cards wear out their write capability after a fair amount of use, so I was thinking of getting an external solid-state drive for it... would this offset the power-saving advantages that I'd get by running a Pi and not a full-size server? And at that point, am I just as well to get an old-fashioned HDD instead?

It could! I hadn't thought of that. Would that come with any significant speed or longevity difference over the SD card?
