USB hub help

I am a teenager who got the raspberry pi to try to teach myself about computers and programming, lately I have had a lot of really frustrating problems with my pi, that I am hopeless to find the solution to. Please Help. The most recent of these problems would be when I moved my pi from my families TV room, and onto my desk. The setup I had is the same except for the monitor, and the power strip. For the mouse, keyboard, and USB hub I had these cheap computer parts called "amazon basics" that I ordered off the internet. I am not sure what the HDMI to VGA adapter is, but the wifi USB adapter is called "Wi-pi" and was designed specifically for the pi, by element 14. I have no idea what is wrong, but once I moved the pi to my room it only supported two USBs, I tried every configuration, PLEASE HELP, (and also, try not to give technical answers) thanks

I am trying to use a VGA monitor on my desk, the monitor is made by hp pavilion and the model is mx70

Hi @5t0rm and welcome to the forum.
In order to try and sort out your problem(s) we need a bit more information to clarify the differences between the setup in the "families TV room" and that (now) on your desk. You mention a different "monitor" and "power strip" so ...
1) What "monitor type" were you using in the TV room (eg. HDMI/DVI, HDMI input of the TV, VGA monitor with the HDMI to VGA adapter, RCA composite video (yellow connector) to TV)? It may also be useful to tell us the make and model.
2) What "monitor type" are you trying to use on your desk? (eg. as above for 1) ) Again it may also be useful to tell us the make and model.
3) W.r.t. the USB hub - is it a powered hub? (For an idea of what to look for take a look at my web page here: http://www.cpmspectrepi.webspace.virgin ... BHubs.html
Don't worry about some of the technical graphs and stuff there - just follow the links to see if any of the photographs are of a hub similar to yours and tell us and/or just post a link to your item on amazon)
4) Not quite sure what you mean by a "powerstrip" but can you post what it states on the label(s) of the power supplie(s) you are using (eg. something like "5V 1000mA" - like the hubs there are example photographs of various power supplies within my webpages starting at http://www.cpmspectrepi.webspace.virgin ... plies.html and again don't worry too much about the detailed technical info.)
On the basis of the information provided so far I suspect your issues are probably power related,

assuming the powerstrip is an extension lead with multiple plug sockets its unlikely that would effect anything looking at the usb hub its an unpowered plug and play so it gets its power from the raspberry pi usb port as do the keyboard and mouse hdmi to vga converters draw power from the pi as well unless its got its own power supply the wifi dongle also draws power the extra load needed to power the vga adapter is the most likely course of the problem as it is the only change made to your system, I would suggest a stronger power supply and if you can afford one a powered hub or wireless mouse and keyboard

@5t0rm, Thank you for providing the extra information. From the input info. for the samsung phone charger (100-240V ~ 50-60Hz 0.15A) I can infer that it's output (the info. required) is probably something like 4.75 V 0.55 A ie. it could be the same as this one:

@Phill Rymer I agree with your interpretation of the issue (you beat me to it ), especially if the O.P. is using the same samsung charger as the one I've measured the behaviour of.

@5t0rm, w.r.t. HDMI to VGA converters that are not externally powered may require too much current from the Pi's HDMI port and some of those tried in the past by other forum members have led to failure of a protection diode associated with that port (including "magic blue smoke") - there are a number of other posts in the forum about that issue. However, FWIW (and as it happens) I just recently tried a fairly low cost and compact type that can be powered externally and screenshots of it working etc. can be found here: http://www.cpmspectrepi.webspace.virgin ... erter.html

Hi & welcome to the Forum!
One question about your monitor: is it VGA only input?
Some monitors also have DVI input.
There are 3 types of DVI : analogue, digital (dvi-d) and both (dvi-i).
I have monitors with DVI-I and use a cable with DVI-I one end & HDMI on the other.
Cost: GBP5.
Great picture quality, but have yet to sort out sound output.
