Power supply question

Sun Dec 08, 2013 4:45 pm

Hello World!

So me again :D, I have a question about power supply, I am right now building a retro arcade cabine (This one Is not mine  )

Image

after managing to install my emulator have all the buttons functional on the Rpi (at least I hope still didn't' tested the joystick)
I am having doubts ho to supply power to all those components on a cheap way.

I basically would have a monitor 15 inch to power the raspberry pi 2x 120mm fans and maybe one or two lamps, I have for the pi and the monitor cables for plugging on wall socket I think to maybe take one of those extension cable with 2 sockets plugs
the monitor and the pie and drill a small whole for the extension... but than I would find problem with the fans, I would overcloock the pie to 900 or more to be sure to have a perfect snes games experience and I would put the pie in front of the fan putting air in the cabin colling the pie and another one in the opposite sucking the hot air out, but than I still searching a solution were to plug those 2 guys and as well the lamps, I thinked that maybe I would need another device to mannage all the power safelly inside the cabin :?: don't know bit lost here.

For me the best of all would be to have this kind here on the back of the cabin

and than just plug switch on and have fun 8-) but this I really have not a clue how to build, On my Rpi I have a push buttons that If I hold for 5 seconds or still didn't figure how it work it send the command halt to my pie This as well could be a must if I take this button out and find a classic plug like the picture above and a push button with 4 pins maybe it work don't know

If you guys Would have any suggestion or idea to help me out ? Would be the best

Best regards Peps

In order to figure this out first you need to list all required voltages and current, for starters there is:
PI 5V 700mA
Fans 12V ??A
Monitor ????
Lamps ?????
Controller ??????
Keyboard/mouse ?????

Once you get a completw list then you can figure out what is needed to power everything.

Hi Dilligaf thanks for this early awnser

So actually the pi I am using a "special adapter" bit more "A", I will write the value on my adapters because I don't really know my true use

Rpi: 5v 2000ma
Fans: 0.26 A http://www.pctop.ch/pInfos.aspx?CODE=14790
Monitor: Needed 12V Dc 3A ---> Using and adapter (not providing enough Ampers don't know if I am destroying my screen but it still worked somehow) 12V 1,25A
For the lamps I would not count in Its more gadget than nothing
the controller is pluged on the RPi trough the Gpios With a special adapter: http://petrockblog.storenvy.com/product ... embly-smds
and there is no keyboard and mouse

You can use something like this to supply the unit http://www.ebay.com/itm/New-100V-240V-T ... 0894050319 Which is 12Vdc to power the monitor and fans then use a ubec http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... ction.html to drop the 12V to 5V to power the PI and controllers. If you go this route I would recommend leaving the 12V supply external and mounting a barrel connector on the unit to plug the 12V into, the barrel connector would split the 12V 3 ways, 1 to the monitor, 1 to the fans and 1 to the ubec . A 12V 5A supply should be plenty, 3A to monitor, .75 to fans and 1A to ubec which would be increased to 2A as the voltage is lowered to 5V

EDIT: If you have an old 18V laptop charger laying around you could use that with this http://www.hobbyking.com/hobbyking/stor ... _21V_.html to supply the 12V and the 5V ubec listed above to provide the 5V

With the monitor built into the cabinet I can see the possible need for a fan or two.
