USB hub not working

Tue Nov 19, 2013 6:24 am

Hey guys, I would love it if someone could help me out here. I tried searching the forums about this, but couldn't find anything to solve my issue. So I have RPi working and running RaspBMC. I followed this site when setting everything up http://mymediaexperience.com/raspberry- ... h-raspbmc/. So I have all those exact components (except the wifi and remote). I bought the Belkin 4-port ultra-slim (http://www.belkin.com/us/p/P-F4U040/), it was on the list of recommended usb hubs for RPi, but I can't seem to get it to work. I popped open the hub to see if i needed to "cut the red wire" but this usb hub has no wires. I opened the terminal on RPi, and it registers it when I plug it in. If I try to plug in something, say my keyboard, into the hub, though RPi sees the keyboard, when I press any keys on the keyboard it does nothing.

Does anyone know how to fix this, am I stupid and missing something blatant?

Also, is it normal that say I boot up RPi with my keyboard in the usb. It works, I can navigate with it. If I unplug the keyboard from the USB, then plug it back in, it no longer works. I can't navigate with it anymore?

I'd really appreciate any help you guys can offer

Have you tried plugging in the keyboard and booting up? If it detects it when you plug it in it should work.

I also found if you plug the keyboard in after the boot it doesnt work.

I'm assuming if you plug the keyboard in directly it works. Got another hub you can try?

When I have the keyboard plugged in when I boot it up, it does work just fine. However if it is plugged into the hub (and the hub into RPi) at bootup, it does not. Ultimately for what I want to do, I need to have more than just one USB port free. Unfortunately I don't have another hub handy, I will have to ask around, but the one I have is listed as a verified working hub for RPi http://elinux.org/RPi_Powered_USB_Hubs.

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

If it's of any interest, I've got a similar hub - F4U038 - that works perfectly, but ...

... it came with a power supply. Although the page you pointed to, on the Belkin site, is under powered hubs, there's no mention of the PSU on that page.
You also don't mention powering the hub. Can we assume you are doing so?

My hub doesn't back-power the Pi. If yours is the same, you don't need to "cut the red wire"

So after 2 days of trying, this evening when i started up RPi, everything worked fine. HUB and all.
Im not quite sure what was different today? My guess is due to a kind of crappy internet service I have in my apartment, maybe the RPi was unable to find/download a driver for the hub, and it finally got one today?
I really have no idea, thats my best guess.

But thanks guys for your assistance, i was really pulling out my hair last night.
