Minimal config for cmdline only mode

Tue Oct 22, 2013 2:54 am

Hi Folks.
I am looking for guidance on a minimal Arch config for the RPi model B when used in cmdline mode (no X)
System will have root and one user account.
will run commands from cron
will use wifi or ethernet
will use ssh
one user will autologin on console via systemd service and run a custom shell + executable
executable writes to framebuffer using SDL

The system runs pretty well now using Arch with updates.
But I would like to remove any unnecessary processes or services as well as minimize disk IO

TIA for any guidance

This is a hard question to answer because we do not know what you have already installed that you do not need. You do say you have a running system, which to me means it already does what you want.

Unlike the other distributions, Arch is very bare bones. The only things on it (in my opinion) that could be done away with in the base system are things that you likely need, like the real time daemon, ssh, and wifi (if it's there already, I forget).

the only thing the system came with that I did away with was the time daemon - I think it is called something like nptd. But if your system is always online, I would think you would want that. I found it constantly checking the time to be annoying, so I set the time on my headless system by sending the real time over ssh up to the pi before I log in after a reboot.

The stock Arch distro for pi is already pretty minimal and cli only. You add [or remove] the stuff you want after install. Distro's like Tiny Core base or Slitaz base seem to have got this down to a fine art. Not sure how much you can strip out of the Arch distro for Pi without rendering other parts of the system inoperable? Guess someone will have dont it though?
If you don't know what you want, you end up with a lot you don't!

Return to “Arch”
