Re: How to get a \ instead of #

Thu May 10, 2012 5:28 pm

I just received my RPi and immediately found it was set for a UK keyboard (I assume this is the issue) because when I type a '\' I get a '#'. I started terminal and changed the keyboard to half dozen different USA keyboards with no change to the behavior. Can someone please tell me what keyboard to select to work with a generic USA keyboard. I have used this keyboard in six different computers with no problem. This problem is not the fault of my keyboard. Thanks for any help. The RPi is useless in this condition.

Defaulting to Letter paper is really awful, since every other country uses A4.  But defaulting to US keyboard is actually the best option, because many other countries have extra keys, so the US layout is the only one that allows all physical keyboards to type the full ASCII repertoire.

And please let us also answer the beginner's question instead of just flaming:sudo dpkg-reconfigure keyboard-configuration

I'm afraid I have no idea. It was just too good an opportunity to miss. I'm sure there must be some US users out there that have already cracked it.

I already did that. I tried a hlf dozen different keyboards with the same result. Ahh, do you have to restart to have it take effect? I hadn't thought about that. Be back in a few minutes.

Yep. Stupid mistake. After restart everything works fine for us yanks. Problem solved.
