thin client LTSP

Thu Sep 26, 2013 10:41 pm

Hello,
As i have mentioned in my previous posts, I am a newbie with the Pi. I am working on a big project, where I have to experiment with the Pi. So among other things, I have proposed to do a thin client with the raspberry, which I saw is included in the Berryboot pack. I installed it on the Pi, installed Edubuntu on an old netbook that I use for testing, and since I dont have a computer with 2 ethernet ports as recommended in posts I found on my research, I used an ethernet switch, and put on the raspberry, the netbook and a 3rd cable that goes to my router. At first, I couln't even get to the login screen on the raspberry pi. After many hours of searching the internet, I saw someone proposed to just connect the client and server without the internet cable. It worked and I finally saw the LTSP client login screen. I typed username and password (by the way, I am not sure if I have to put the server login info or something else) and I keep getting the message "no response from server" and it restarts. After a few hours again, I saw a post from someone with the same problem and he made it work with setting server=1.2.3.4 on a file in the sd card (cmd something, I don't remember right now), but that did nothing for me. All I want is to be able to log so I can make some screenshots for the project. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Setting up LTSP is quite involved but once you have the basic network infrastructure in place, it's relatively easy. For LTSP to work properly it needs a DNS and DHCP server that resolve IP addresses to names and hand them out respectively. Your router acts as a DHCP server in your network, which collides with the DHCP server LTSP needs. It also forwards any DNS requests to the internet, again conflicting with LTSP. That's why it worked when you disconnected the internet ;)

The other thing LTSP needs, is an isolated environment for the client to work from, the chroot for the client. It seems you don't have that. Mind, you need to set up a full account for any client you want to connect to the LTSP server on that server! It is those credentials that you need to enter when logging in on the LTSP server.

Advise: study the LTSP doc's on their website: http://www.ltsp.org/

Thank you for your answer. I guess I will have to spend more time on this :)

I searched how to fix my problem on the internet, but no results. Noone mentions that there is anything else needed to make it work. I noticed that on Edubuntu, the ethernet connection only works when I am using the live cd. When I install Edubuntu, I can't use it. I downloaded "LTSP Live" on the installed Edubuntu (because it is also not included) and I can't configure the ltsp, since the ethernet is not working. I installed Ubuntu, because I know that ethernet would work there, and downloaded LTSP Live, but even though I made the LTSP connection, the client no longer sends me to the login screen (it gets stuck in the black screen asking for berryterminal login). Can someone help me with some clear instructions of what to do with my setup? Maybe if I can make the ethernet work on Edubuntu or somehow make the client connect on the Ubuntu server.

Hi All,

I'm working with Edubuntu LTSP and Berryterminal.
Is there a way to have local storage enabled (e.g. USB sticks)?
I mean to insert an USB stick on Raspberry and see the disk on LTSP server (for all users).

Thanks!
