Retropie - Some problems with gngeo

Mon Sep 02, 2013 6:41 pm

Hi,
i am using gngeo 0.85 which comes with the RetroPie-image and the most roms working fine so far. But i still have some problems:

1. How can i change it to fullscreen? I wrote fullscreen true into the gngeorc-file but that doesnt seem to change anything. I still have a small black frame around the picture which is annoying.

2. Is there a way to setup a exit button to exit the emulator directly like all the other emulators do it? So far i can only exit to the emulator menu and choose exit from there but i would like to exit directly back to the emulationstation with one button.

3. How can i change the names of the games? For all the other emulators i could rename the roms easily but when i do that with the neogeo-roms they dont start anymore. The gamelist shows shortnames like mslug for Metal Slug par example. So far the only way i worked out is with the gamelist.xml but thats not practically if you dont want to use gamecovers. I prefer the simple list because i dont want to setup all the gamecovers by myself and the es-scraper doesnt work properly (wrong covers/ wrong gamenames etc.).

4. Sometimes my controller-settings from the gneorc-file dissapear and i cant use the gamepad in gngeo anymore. Then i have to write my controller-settings again in the file to get it working again. Anyone have an idea why this is happening?

Sorry for my bad english ;)

One of the issues with GnGeo is that it is VERY particular on which ROM revision it will run. If Neo-Geo games are you priority try puddings FBA which is the best emulator on the RPi for Neo-Geo titles and ROM compatibility, it can either be downloaded from The Pi Store or below. However I'm not sure Retro Pie has a 'core' for it.

I wouldnt say that Neo Geo is my priority. I am using NES, SNES, GBA, Master Sytem and Mega Drive too. But i dont have much problems with the ROM compatibility of gngeo, pretty much everything works.

Otherwise would FBA help me solving my problems? Fullscreen and a exit-button are very important and i dont get it working with gngeo. As far as i know FBA is also a part of RetroPie (at least i have a ROM folder for it ;)), so this could work.

The issue with GnGeo v0.8 is its an unofficial 'fork' of the Linux original specifically for the GP32, hence the 'Fullscreen' problems that don't exist in v0.7. I think its worth a try!

I tried FBA now and none of my ROMs is working with it. You meant i should try v0.7 of gngeo? I am not sure how to change the es_system.cfg to do that....

After some research i think i need a Neo Geo-Bios for FBA to get the games working. But which files i need exactly? Its always different. And where i have to put them?

I'm not sure about the Retro Pie version of FBA but generally put the Neo-Geo Bios in the folder where the ROMS go (If GnGeo works it must already contain the Bios files in a folder somewhere as ALL emulators require them?). For most Neo-Geo emulators the MINIMUM files you are looking for are: 000-lo.lo and sfix.sfx then one of the following: sp-s2.sp1 (Europe), sp-j2.rom (Japan), or sp-e.sp1 (USA), but generally you can use a Bios Zip from any site as they will include these plus other such as the unibios etc. The unibios was specifically built/sold by a hacker for owners of the original AES Hardware as to swap between the MVS/AES and region so they could use MVS Carts on the console due to the price difference e.g. Metal Slug MVS $40, AES $1000+! Or as was the case with Samurai Showdown 5, playing the JAP version unlocks the 'Blood' which was missing in the EUR/USA releases (but the data is on the Cart). Not all emulators offer the facility to use the unibios though.
