Preparing things on another RPI before switching to another

Mon Sep 02, 2013 3:15 pm

Hello,

I've got a raspberry pi (mod. B) and an SD card. On this SD card, I have installed Raspbian. I've ordered another raspberry pi for some specific application (mod. B too). When I'll receive it, I'll be in a hurry because the order won't be shipped till end of the week. As I'm in a hurry and that I've got specific things to install and to configure for the `upcoming raspberry pi' (i.e. the one I'll receive soon), I'm thinking about doing everything on this raspberry pi, on the SD card, and then, when I'll receive the other one, introduce this SD card into its SD card slot, hoping everything will be just as on the other one.

Will this work? I think so because
1) Both RPI won't be that different (even if the last one has been bought 6 months after the first),
2) There is nothing definitely set and the boot will anyway adapt depending on the new configuration.

Thanks for any quick answer.

The only difference between your old Pi and your new one is likely to be the memory chip on the top of the SoC.
The newest most up-to-date firmware (from update - upgrade, above) should work on both

IF you got the first Pi only six months ago, it is extremely likely that they will both have the same memory. The likeliest difference between them will be where they were manufactured. The older one may have been made in China, while the new one is almost certainly made in the UK. That difference will not affect how your installs work.
