Can not logout of xfce, it restarts automatically?

Sun Aug 25, 2013 7:13 pm

Not sure what I did here, but I'm running Arch, and I have my boot up process set to automatically log me in as my sudo user, and then automatically start up xfce.
That all works just fine, and I need it to do the autologins at boot for what I'm doing. However, if I want to logout of xfce I am having trouble... when I logout of the DE it goes back to the text screen, but then it just starts up the DE automatically again... and I can hit ctrl+x and it stops it... for a second... and then it just runs the DE again... how do I prevent this from happening when I logout of xfce, yet still have it auto logon at boot? I used these instructions to setup my DE auto start... https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Start_X_at_Login
This is also happening with the sudo user... auto login at boot works fine, but if I try to logout from the sudo user say to switch to the root account, it just runs the autologin and I can't make the process stop... what did I do wrong? I used these instructions to setup my user auto login... https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Au ... al_console

Probably because you forced an update in a non-standard way, as per your previous postings.

Advice to be ignored:

Install Arch
update - pacman -Syu
Install LXDE DE
Configure netwrok and sound and any other settings
Install gPhoto

No... it had nothing to do with forcing an update to the firmware... this started happening right after I setup the autologin for the sudo user and XFCE per the instructions on the Arch Wiki... which I did long before the firmware update.

But yeah, the forced firmware update did break my CMA somehow :-P so I probably won't be doing that again. Should I remove my post on how to force a firmware update, or leave it for people who may want to experiment with it... I was pretty clear that it could break things and if you use it it's at your own risk. Advice on this would be appreciated :-)

Why do you suggest LXDE instead of XFCE?

LXDE DE and Midori Browser were offered from day one from the Arch Linux Arm, ARMv6 repositories. (I had my first Pi in July last year).

OK... I don't really need a browser installed for this project, and maybe I'll have to try LXDE, but I preferred the layout and customization options of the XFCE DE.

At some point, once I get everything nailed down and working smoothly, I would like to mount all the hardware in a weatherproof box and use a small touchscreen to program all my variables for the time lapse and motion control shoots... I felt that XFCE would suit those goals better compared to the other DEs I researched... but I'm open to trying whatever will work best down the road.

However I don't think the problem I'm having now with the sudo user and DE logins getting stuck in a loop has anything to do with the DE itself but rather how the autologin was setup from the virtual console.

I didn't really find any other good instructions to auto login my sudo user and then auto start my DE on boot other than the ones in the Arch Wiki... I know there has to be other ways.
