Rasbian - where is the screensaver?

Fri Aug 16, 2013 2:37 pm

Hello y'all,

I'm feeling very stupid for asking this beginner's question - but I have been looking for quite some time and I have not found the screensaver in the current Rasbian std. edition.

1) Where can I change the settings in terms of "what screensaver will be used" ?
2) Where can I find additional screensavers and how do I get them running?
3) is there a slide show screensaver that uses all the pictures I put in a certain folder?

Thanks so much in advance!

BJ

no screensaver is installed per default! But raspbian will turn of the screen after an interval.

to install generic screen save support do:
sudo apt-get install xscreensaver
.
In the gui you will now have the "screensaver" option under preferences.

but its very basic.

Many brilliant screen savers exist for linux, but for raspbian they seem a bit overkill.
If you want to see what screen savers exist for Linux you should try an Ubuntu Live CD sometimes, Ubuntu comes with many nice screen savers.

Actually for modern monitors (in contrast to old CRT units) there is no technical reason you need a screen saver anymore.
its just "Bling", and raspbian is without any of that, to the degree it is simply sparse.

Thanks! that did the job! I was thinking to use a slide show saver to display some images in a digital picture frame - but now I am using "qiv" or "feh" to have a much more customizable slideshow.
