RPi does nothing when voltage is applied

Tue Aug 06, 2013 4:19 pm

Hello there,

Once I apply voltage across the terminals of the RPi, the PWR led lights up, but nothing else blinks, or seem to happen at all.

I get no picture on the screen, the keyboard shows no LEDS light up, and does not respond to number presses 1-4, or any of the lock keys (num lock, caps lock etc). It looks like the thing does not respond.

TP1 measures 5.108V relative to GND. TP2 measures 0V relative to GND. The RPi draws stable 106.52mA from the power supply.

I am trying to boot from a sandisk 32GB SD card with NOOBS unzipped onto it. The file system is FAT32. The RPi did seem to work before I formated the SD card using gparted, and unzipped NOOBS.zip onto it. This tells me that probably there is something wrong with the way the SD card is set up, but I have followed the NOOBS guide to the letter (at least as far as I can tell), and it doesn't work.

What is going on?

Kind regards,
Marius

Could you tell us more about the situation where it did work? That's the key to it all.
It sounds like you did have it working at one point.
And some folks need to stop being fanboys and see the forest behind the trees.

The TP1 voltage is fine. TP2 is connected to GND so should always measure 0 volts to GND. Current drawn is very low compared to a working RPi, but that could just be that it hasn't booted and various bits of the SoC and RAM haven't been switched on.

So the most likely causes centre on the SD card. Either it is not properly written or there is some physical fault preventing one or more of the card contacts not mating with its partner in the socket. Have a close look at the socket.

Try rewriting the card again using the instructions for formatting and writing in the multipage quick start guide linked from the NOOBS section of the 'Downloads' page on this site.

If the still no success, put the card back in your PC's card reader and report here the folders and files in the very top level of the card.

I don't know what happened, but all of a sudden it decided to work :) M
