soon to new user

Tue Aug 06, 2013 11:34 am

I am seriously thinking of getting a Raspberry Pi to replace my aging HDX1000

i like the HDX1000 for the built in transmission and able to play movies when it also downloads other things
would the Raspberry Pi be able to download using transmission to a NAS drive and play different movies / TV shows at the same time or would i be better off getting 2 Raspberry Pi's one for XBMC and the other to run transmission on

Thanks

I would say, you can have NAS and Xbcm on one raspberry. I have that on raspbian + xbcm + samba. If I want download some torrents (of course I'm talking about legal downloads) you can connect to pi and run rtorrent from your local machine (ssh), you can run rtorrent from Raspberry PI does not matter. You can also install transmission but try console version. For me rtorrent works fine.

For ssh you can use screen and create session ,run rtorrent close your putty or whatever you use, close and all will be still running. Learn screen it is very useful.

You can play 1080p but you need to buy codecs.

the RPI will playback .H263 files with no codec needed
if you have Mpeg 2 or VC-1 then you may want to buy codecs for them [or convert] as they will not be hardware decoded without H264 is in the price of the Raspberry PI

OK sorry I did not know that, but right I have few movie that I cannot play until I bought those codecs. Movies probably was in Mpeg 2 or VC-1. Also I don't want to convert all them now to h264 :)

ok, so will the Pi cope with playing videos through XBMC and downloading some video files at the same time?

ill prob stick with transmission because i am use to it and i use showrss to get episodes and it can push torrents to transmission when a new episode is added to the RSS feed, so i dont have to do anything except watch what has been downloaded

plus i use Transdroid on my phone to remote download files or videos if i am not at home
