Was your problem with the TOP USB port not working ever resolved?
I have the same problem, top USB port is not working. I am fairly certain the problem is not caused by the usb devices attached, a mouse and a keyboard which work fine on my other pi's.
I can swap mouse an keyboard between top and bottom usb port, the device in top usb port won't work, the one in the bottom port will.
To work around I use an external usb.hub (non-powered) in the bottom usb port, both keyboard and mouse attached to the external hub, in this configuration all works fine.
I would however still like to get the top usb port to work. Looking into the top port and comparing it with the bottom port it looks as if the two center pins of the top port protrude less then those of the bottom port, however it feels like they should make contact...
Power supply should not be an issue either (5V 2.4A)
Any help / suggestions would be much appreciated, although this is a brand-new PI (model B, rev 2 so no poly-fuses) I'm not keen on going through the hassle of sending it back..
Issue seems to have been resolved, unfortunately I cannot post a conclusive cause for the issue. I want ahead and replaced, SD card, mouse, power supply and removed camera, then the top USB port worked. So one by one a restored the original components to try and pin-point the cause of the problem.
Eventually with all components except the mouse being back to what they were before, the top USB port was still working, but alas after 10-15 minutes the mouse, in the top USB port would disconnect and nothing would be detected on the top port until power was removed. I then switched to yet another, known good, power supply, this seems to have eradicated to problem...
However then I went back to the original setup including mouse and expected the top USB port to malfunction as before, the top USB port performed admirably.
Maybe it was a mechanical problem after all, to verify the USB connector was soldered on properly I measured resistance between data connections in the connector it self and the soldered points on the PCB, the prodding may have fixed it ( I would expect temporarily)
So unfortunately no conclusive answer as to what cause the issue, as I cannot reliably reproduce it.
