mpeg/vc codec license makes no difference

Fri Jul 26, 2013 1:30 pm

I purchased the mpeg and vc codec licenses.

I put them in /boot/config.txt

Then to make sure they're enabled:
/opt/vc/bin/vcgencmd codec_enabled MPG2
.................................MPG4
..... H264, WVC1, MJPG, WMV9....
vcgencmd shows that they are all enabled.

But yet omxplayer somevideo.avi/mp4... plays videos just as well with or without the codec licenses.
So, why did I waste money on the licenses?

You don't need the codecs for mp4/h264 (HD video), that one is installed as standard.

What you can do now you have the additional codecs is play mpg/mpeg2 files (SD video) and a few other formats.

Now I'm confused.
Oh, well. I already purchased it.
