Just connect an HD via the USB. Either get a USB drive or a USB to SATA/PATA convertor if you want to use an old HD drive from somewhere.

These days you can buy hard disks with USB ports in almost every shop.

So I went in to Maplins and bought 1TB FreeAgent® GoFlex™ Ultra-portable Hard Drive and a "found it at the back of a cupboard" half opened 3-port powered USB hub with integrated 5-in-1 card reader.  Plugged them in the Pi and it's all good - USB drive now formatted to ext3 and a swap partition, all card readers found and its providing enough juice to run one of those compact apple iMac keyboards with a LogiTech mouse plugged into the keyboards integrated hub.

Now I'm trying to figure out how to do the pivot_root thing to swap from SD card to HDD for / once booted...
