Re: SD card errors with new Debian

Tue Apr 17, 2012 8:19 am

Hi, I finally managed to boot my Pi yesterday however I had a lot of errors while booting regarding the SD card.

It reported error -110 and that it cannot set the SD card registers (or something similar).

I assume this is because the Pi doest like my SD card?

Thanks

Dan

Could be, it could also be a Power supply issue though.

Really - I'm sure I used the BB phone charger which is rated at 1A.

Will check tonight after grabbing another card.

2gb, kingston, not sure wont be 10 as it's at least a year old if not a few more.

It might still be a Class 10 - not impossible.  I'm using a 4GB Class 4 Kingston and it's working fine, although I've read reports that Kingston SD cards have given a lot of problems.

I had an issue with a MicroSD card (no class labeling) - I know there are a lot of potential issues with these cards, but I re-wrote the image onto the card, tried again and it worked!

I will try again just in case and see what else I can liberate a card out of.

I do seem to have a card or 2 missing.

Well it was the card.

It took a while to figure that out as the other power supply wasn't up to the job – both supply's rated at 1a.

Went back to the bb one which is rated at 700mA and all is well – time to get another sd card.

Thanks

I've had these errors with all Class 6 cards I've tried.

Only Class 4 cards work consistently.

The card that did work was a samsung 4gb class 6 so something is very odd with that.

I'm no SD card expert but I gather there is a lot of differences between cards beyond just "Class x" and read/write speed ratings, having to do with differences among specific flash controller chips. Moreover, the same brand and product label may have different chips inside depending on spot market prices at the time of manufacture, etc.  That's even before accounting for actual fakes and labelling fraud, see for example:

I had a similar problem with a SD card (Sandisk, Ultra II, SD, 15 MB/s) and the debian image. The Broadcom thing could obviously load the boot loader and kernel from it, but the linux kernel couldn't read it, so it couldn't find (/sbin/)init.

I had to buy a SDHC card, and now it works fine.

Apparently it may be something to do with swapping to low power mode.

Can you confirm which card you purchased which is working fine?

All the cards I have are Class 6 (Sandisk 32gb, unbranded 8gb) and whilst it all seems to load fine (and fast) my USB/Ethernet drop all the time, thought it could be powersupply but used official chargers ranging from 500mah to 1000mah, so it COULD be my card...

I'll see what details of the c6 I can get when Im get home tonight.

I found some of my 1A power supplys were not supplying enough juice - I think it was my USB cable as my phone complained when I used it to charge it.

There are numerous fraudulent SDHC cards offered for sale on the web etc. so unless you purchase directly from the manufacturer they need a comprehensive test of their capacity and performance. Put the SDHC card into a USB dongle and test it. For those having to use MS Windows the below is a good test and will take a time to complete its tests.

Test for Fake USB Flash Drives – H2testw

H2testw is a free tool that can be used to test for Counterfeit or Fake USB flash drives, and check your USB Flash Drive for errors. It works by filling the chosen target drive with test data and then reads this data back to verify it. You should probably copy your data elsewhere before performing this test on the USB Drive, or you could risk losing data.

Authors Website: http://www.heise.de/software/download/h2testw/50539

It has the option to run the program in English.
