piface again and again

Fri Jun 14, 2013 7:06 pm

hello
i have now tryed over and over to install piface by ising this guide:
http://www.element14.com/community/serv ... 0213v1.pdf
But when i am done.
No result.
When i start the pi it is loading -> i login -> typing "startx"
and then it goes black and after a while it says server error.

can some on parse me to a guide that works first time.
or to an "wheezy" os that is ready to use with piface.

I am tired to keep trying

Are you using the "latest" (28 Oct 2012) SD card image from the University of Manchester site? It is rather old. What version of RPi hardware do you have?

Does the RPi work OK (including 'startx') without piface connected?

Ok, in order to find out why X is failing to start we need to look at some log files.

Please run this command after booting up your Pi and trying startx

Code: Select all

tar czvf /tmp/logs.tgz /var/log/Xorg.0.log .xsession-errors
It will warn you "tar: Removing leading `/' from member names", don't worry about that, it makes things safer.

Then reply and attach the file /tmp/logs.tgz to your post. We can then looks at the files (which can be quite long) and check for errors.

I am assuming you can get the file from your Pi to the computer where you are posting from - I don't want you typing in hundreds of lines of messages by hand :!: If not, maybe we can see if we can help you find errors in those files (they usually have " E " or " (EE) " in the line.

I followed instructions on the Piface development blog "Installing the software yourself in Raspbian" and installed on current Raspbian and it worked for me. Model B Rev 2. Pi.

after startx it keep typing :"No protocol specified"

And this is what i get of your tip:
""""
tar: Removing leading `/' from member names
/var/log/Xorg.0.log
tar: .xsession-errors: Cannot stat: No such file or directory
tar: Exiting with failure status due to previous errors
""""

Ok, so there is no .xsession-errors file, just the Xorg log. The command should still have generated an output file called /tmp/logs.tgz Could you share that file with us by attaching it to your next message.
