Monitor display troubles

Fri Jun 14, 2013 2:40 am

Hey everyone I am currently trying to build a portable mame console, i guess it could be called a pi box (haha instead of Xbox). i have a small 3.5 inch backup camera composite display i got off of amazon. I want to connect this display when the console is mobile and unplug the composite display and plug the pi into a hdmi tv when I am just using it as a normal TV console. I have to go into my config file and edit it to switch displays. Here is what i think the problem is: I either need a new config file (if so could someone direct me to where i can get one BTW I'M RUNNING RASPBIAN), or I just can not output through the rca jack and through the hdmi port without editing the config file and rebooting. Could someone please tell me if there is a way to have both display ports active at the same time but only one being used. Here is my current config file:

# uncomment if you get no picture on HDMI for a default "safe" mode
hdmi_safe=1

# uncomment this if your display has a black border of unused pixels visible
# and your display can output without overscan
disable_overscan=1

# uncomment the following to adjust overscan. Use positive numbers if console
# goes off screen, and negative if there is too much border
overscan_left=16
overscan_right=18
overscan_top=10
overscan_bottom=5

# uncomment to force a console size. By default it will be display's size minus
# overscan.
#framebuffer_width=1680
#framebuffer_height=1050

# uncomment if hdmi display is not detected and composite is being output
#hdmi_force_hotplug=1

# uncomment to force a specific HDMI mode (this will force VGA)
hdmi_group=0
hdmi_mode=57

# uncomment to force a HDMI mode rather than DVI. This can make audio work in
# DMT (computer monitor) modes
#hdmi_drive=1

# uncomment to increase signal to HDMI, if you have interference, blanking, or
# no display
#config_hdmi_boost=7

# uncomment for composite PAL
sdtv_mode=0

#uncomment to overclock the arm. 700 MHz is the default.
arm_freq=800

# for more options see http://elinux.org/RPi_config.txt
gpu_mem=128
core_freq=250
sdram_freq=400
over_voltage=0
start_x=1

Thanks in advance any help is appreciated. :D

Your first problem is

Code: Select all

hdmi_safe=1
This sets

Code: Select all

hdmi_force_hotplug=1
config_hdmi_boost=4
hdmi_group=1
hdmi_mode=1
disable_overscan=0
and everything else to do with the screen is ignored

So comment that out again (put a # in front of it) and find out what you need to make your HDMI screen work.
If hdmi_force_hotplug=1 is there, uncommented, then the HDMI system will be used irrespective of what's connected, so make sure that's commented out.

The system should work as you want it out-of-the-box, detecting HDMI when it's plugged in, and using the composite when no HDMI detected
