Is raspbian a stable OS?

Mon Jun 10, 2013 3:03 am

hello, i not too long ago bought a pi and have installed multiple OS. however most of the OS i installed seem to be problematic...for example, RISC OS is awesome, and fast, but it lacks wireless capabilities. Raspbian is complete, but it seems laggy and every time i open a webpage to browse, the green graph on the lower right seem to increase vigorously until my pi freezes. is this the problem of the OS or the pi? because RISC does not freeze. I'm afraid if i use raspbian to carry out processes such as servers it will die on me =( any advice? will pidora be any better?

Arch Linux is leaner , but you must know how to configure it.
It has a pretty good wiki , i've heard.

Web browsing will always be slow on the Pi. Check the
forum for optimzed browsers and other tips , but don't expect
anything magical.

Raspbian is great and you will have excellent synergy with any other Debian-based systems you may be running.

If you're looking to set up a server then don't get sidetracked by desktop performance.

What will you be serving? If this is for authentication, cluster management, routing, webpages, times serving, running a MUD or whatnot, you can easily replace a 3GHz celeron server with a pi running raspbian, and not regret it.

Indeed. The desktop may not be super fast, but as a server, you don't need a desktop...many are using Raspbian in a server environment no problem at all..

im planning to make something like a siri proxy server. can raspbian perform this smoothly? also, as a server, i dont need a monitor, but just out of curiosity, will pluggin in a hdmi make any significant difference in performance?

Not really - HDMI is run by the GPU.
