How would you begin creating a rubiks cube solver? I guess i'm kind of new to all of this.

That's a very difficult task. Do you know any manual ways of solving the puzzle? I think there are two or three established methods.

It's a cheat but have a look at gnubik.

sudo apt-get install gnubik

gnubik &

It think it shows the Mellor solution method.

I think 5.5 seconds is the time to beat :)

I can solve it manually, with a 30 second average. Thanks for the source.

Point me in the right direction, i'm a noob with this.

Could you explain what you mean by "How would you begin creating a rubiks cube solver?"

What is the end result, e.g. do yo want to construct a robot to manipulate a cube and solve a puzzle?

Just for info, somewhere here on the raspi site a video of a cube solving machine was posted. Months ago, maybe last year. Maybe somebody else remembers it?

It was a sort of open-topped thing into which you dropped your scrambled cube. It rapidly rotated it six times to photograph each face, then with hardly any delay for processing it started to spin away to finish the cube.

Looked very impressive. I don't recall if it was actually based on a raspi or not, but obviously there was a lot of hardware to do the churning.

That was my post:

It's a lego mindstorm/ARM powered mobile phone setup called Cubestormer :-)

But there are simpler robot designs to do this:
