Re: HDMI + Analog audio?

Hi,

I tried without luck to find a topic on if the Pi allows HDMI video out, while stereo audio can be tapped off the analog jack?

Mainly because my tv and my projector have crappy audio, and I need to feed the audio somehow to my studio monitors (only accepting analog jack/mini jack or RCA)

HMDI video with analogue audio is supported.

But note the analog audio is much lower quality than HDMI.

As long as it's equal to 16bit 44,1kHz I'm happy.
Why is it "much" lower in quality? Does it have a lot of buzzing or noise on the analog outs?

It's not equal to 16bit 44kHz. It's one bit audio thought a gpio with filtering.

I think we're talking portable radio quality.

Why the ? It"s no different to for example an iPod or iPhone - the dock connector audio out is much higher quality than the headphone output.

PWM DA conversion is fine, but I think the low-pass filter on the Pi might not have the best quality. Anyway, we won't know until we have the devices in our hands.

So far I've always been happy with internal audio of laptops, MP3/4 players, desktops, except the old Pentiums which had soundcards with a sound quality of 22kHz, 8bit.

I'm easily content, if it even sounds like a tape recorder's headphones I'm happy.

What I would call lower quality is audio that has a constant buzz in it, or crackling audio (due to buffer underrun, or static discharge, or EM radiation), or audio that can not produce the full spectrum of frequencies of human hearing (usually between 20Hz and 20kHz).

However lousy the sound quality may be compared to the internal HDMI port, I'm sure it'll sound better on studio monitors, or a decent Home Theater system, than HDMI sound through the speakers of my TV!

Which leaves me pretty much looking forward to have this device replace my current HT center (an aged netbook, with Celeron M processor, only good for sub 720p video's.

Does your TV not have RCA out that you could then connect to something? That could be an alternative if the sound quality is low.

yes, only an optical. But I don't want to buy another component (optical to analog).

Apparently that's the problem - buzzing and noise. Something to do with the uhmm... audio output being on the same line as the rest of the stuff, leading to interference when the SD card is being read, stuff like that. electrical noise...

Nobody has a production model yet, so nobody here really has any idea about how bad it is, but someone (JamesH, I think) commented before about it, and how the 'CD Quality' was a bit overstated, because of the electrical noise issue (possibly caused by the power input redesign). There's been talk about the GPIO ports being used to drive an external DAC, which would improve audio quality up to the quality of the external DAC, but if your problem is that your TV speakers are crappy, then I'd do as the above poster said, and look for a headphones/RCA socket  on your TV that you can plug into an external amp/speakers...
note: I may or may not know what I'm talking about...

like I said, I only have optical out, no analog.

As far as EM noise could be reduced with a small condenser.

EM radiation could be reduced with aluminum foil 'cage of Faraday'.
