Broke my pi

Thu May 02, 2013 3:00 am

Hello , I was messing around with my pi , that i just got 5 days ago ,building a case and i broke it. Yes I know i'm in idiot. I had left the sd card in and when i was moving it around the gray plastic around the sd card slot broke off. The card will not stay in place. Is my 5 day old card junk ? can i fix it ? can a get another pi and link them ? any help , ideas ( no duct tape will not hold it in ) or even confirmation of my lack of thought would be appreciated. thanks

Difficult to know without pictures, but can you glue the plastic back in place with epoxy resin or similar? Alternatively you may be able to find a pin compatible SD card holder you can replace the broken one with - there are a few designs out there that will fit.

Depending on how bad the damage is, you might be able to repair it with a bit of plastic and some glue.

There's one way of doing this detailed here http://raspi.tv/2012/how-to-fix-a-broke ... spberry-pi

You can also do the quick and dirty fix with a clothespeg.
Or you can go the whole hog and replace the card slot with a metal one. People have done all three. :D

My credit card fix is on the Pi I use for my flag Wii controller waving Gertboard demo. The card doesn't get moved around much, but it seems fairly stable. I did have to add some extra Gorilla glue at the sides after a few weeks. I keep a clothespeg like clamp in my toolbox though - just in case.

if you got it from farnell, call them up and they should give you your money back to replace it. you will need to wrap it in something and for me they had ups come and collect it. this my take some time but if you can not wait get a strong clothes peg to hole it in place, it worked for me until it was replaced

I'm not convinced they are required to give you a replacement when you actually broke it by bad handling, so that's good service from Farnell,

Thanks for the replies ! I'm going to try the credit card fix today, the damage to the slot is identical to the picture in rpdom's link to the credit card repair. My wife felt bad for me so she agreed I should order another Pi , which I promptly did, so if this works I will have two ! Will post back with results. Thanks again. Geoff

I used a small piece of strip board. The advantage is that the epoxy runs up the holes when you clamp it up and so makes a much stronger joint. I also filed a bit of the board down on one edge so the strip board was level with edge of the card guide.
Attached is a small photo.
