Building a Device with LEDs and LCDs

Hello

I am a software programmer new to Raspberry Pi. I have limited knowledge in electronics and have been trying to do lot of reading on the internet on how we connect external electronic devices to Pi.

I would like to build a device which takes text input from pi and display it on small LCDs which can take upto 4 to 6 characters. I also would like to turn on/off couple of LEDs for every text input. I am attaching a mockup of my device.

I would like to know, if this is something that i can do with one Pi. If so, can you please suggest links or education material on how i go about connecting this circuit and the kind of equipment that i would need.
