Unusual USB hub/Card Reader problem?

Fri Apr 19, 2013 1:56 pm

I've just acquired a "Fachi" mouse pad with built-in 3-port hub & card reader (one of several "marked down" at a local "pound store") which is not "detected" by Linux at all (I've tried it on a Pi with wheezy, and my netbook with Ubuntu and oldish "Live Knoppix" on a USB stick. On the same netbook Windows XP does find it eventually - it took a minute or two. Whilst I am well aware that there are USB devices that are "Windows only" (ie. no Linux drivers etc.) I've usually found that "lsusb" gives out an unrecognised vendor and/or device id, but, in this case nothing! To be fair, its packaging does only mention Windows & MAC OS (but that's not uncommon). The only clue, so far, is that "dmesg" reports:
hub 1-0: 1.0: connect-debounce failed port 4 disabled
or similar (hub and port numbers depend where it's plugged in).
I'm curious if anyone has had any similar experiences, and whether this message implies (partial?) hardware failure or whether it's just an "incompatible device"?
Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm
