USB Wifi dongle not connecting on startup.

Thu Apr 11, 2013 8:55 am

Hi there,

I recently bought a Raspberry Pi from ModMyPi, and the USB wifi was working from "XWindows" - i.e. connecting.

I now boot my Pi "headless" - with WiFi USB and Power connected.

I would like to use SSH, to the Pi - but the Pi isn't automatically connecting to my Wifi newtwork... this is straight from plugging in the power; I would not like to start XWindows, as then SSH doesen't seem to work...

I think this did work at some point... but not now - what is the solution?

I don't know the chip for the USB WiFi - but it was working when I go to "startx" - then I can use Midori etc...

But when I boot, to the command line - it does not seem to connect to the WiFi network...

Help please?!

Thats unusual I use the X window to set up my SSID and password and never need it again after that first time I use it headless and wireless in fact I used my model "B" to set up my wirless connection then transfered the n150 and the SD to my model "A" where it's working fine.

Are you using the latest Wheezy image or some other?

Using 'ifconfig' on the command line should show if the dongle is recognised and if it gets an IP address.

If you run ifconfig and find out that you have no wireless ip address on your headless pi, then a couple people have come across this problem. Obviously you are going to have to become "non-headless" or do this through a wired internet connection.

I also suffered from this issue, but was able to resolve it by running a script to check for an ip, and if it was not there, reset the interface. I would be very interested to know the make and model of your wifi dongle, as I am trying to pinpoint a common cause for this problem.

See here for another person that just posted the same problem:

Sorry - it wasn't any of those things...

It was late yesterday - I was tired, I forgot to put the SD Card in.....

It works fine now.

Sorry for wasting your time...
