Is my RPi dead?

Sun Apr 07, 2013 3:01 pm

Hello everyone.

Few weeks ago I tested some electronics controlled by my RPi. At one point the RPi shuted down itself and I wasn't able to make it boot again. I thought about a SDCard corruption and I let it on the side for quite some time.

This week-end I had a bit of time to test it again, I reinstalled the latest raspbian on the SDCard and tried to boot my RPi.

Unfortunately when I plug the power, only the red "power" light is on and nothing get out of the HDMI port.

Is my Raspberry Pi dead?

Thanks

No-one can give a definitive answer to that question just from the information you have given so far. Having said that, I would rate the probability as higher than 0.5.

The question you should have asked is "What can I try to make my RPi work again?"

Does the green ACT LED flash at all when you apply power?

Yes, I have now watched more carefully and the ACT green light blink a few time when I plug the power.
After that it seems that this ACT is still on, only very faint (that's why I didn't saw it the first time).

Is there any hope? Any measurement I can do? (I have a voltmeter).

Thanks

Take a look at the wiki help at http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting. It could be that your PSU was "marginal" and might have degraded when you overloaded it. It also helps us to say what model Pi you're using, OS and any peripherals that are plugged in. Try using the yellow RCA A/V output to feed the default low-res display to the equivalent A/V input on a TV - if the Pi fails to detect HDMI that's its "fallback mode", and there may be a few lines of informative text displayed before "boot-up" grinds to a halt.
Trev.
Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

Hi again,

I'm really slow in my investigations, sorry for that.
My RPi is a model B with 512Mo.

I bought a new PSU which can provide 5V at 1A.
When I plug the RPi (with a fresh installed SD card):
- The PWR red light stays on
- ACT green light flash 1 time, then few seconds later if flashes really fast multiple times (like a network led when there is activity on the line or a HDD light during I/O).
- then the ACT light turns off for good.

After a few seconds the CPU is getting really hot and it smells like burning electronics.

I measured some things (as indicated there http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting# ... r_problems)

Between TP1 and TP2 I got 3.7V, with every PSU I have in the house (4 of them).
Between TP2 and the connector of the F3 polyfuse: 4.4V and 3.7V.

So I guess my polyfuse have some trouble... should I buy a new unit?

Thank you.
