New to Pi; Keyboard, Mouse Won't Work (SOLVED)

Tue Apr 02, 2013 12:38 am

Hello,

I just got my first Pi, eagerly plugged it in and got it set up for desktop use. Install seemed to go fine, keyboard worked. At the end I selected the boot into graphical mode option and restarted. I plugged in a mouse, but when it started, the mouse didn't work. I don't believe the keyboard is working either, though it could be that I just don't know any keyboard shortcuts that work on the desktop.

I've read in other postings that it may be because I don't have enough power. I have a power supply rated at 850mA, is that enough? If not, can anybody point me to an exact recommended power supply?

Any other ideas why it might not be working? Could it be defective?

850 mA should be enough, but (big BUT) if it can't provide what the Pi and its peripherals needs at close to 5v the USB peripherals often suffer. Checking the voltage across TP1 and TP2 is the established method of checking. Some details would be a big help, type of keyboard and mouse, the PSU, whether you're using a powered USB hub, The Image you're using on the SD card. Some mice and keyboards don't work at all on the Pi, more so if you're using an old image of the OS on it.
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......

Keyboard checking...
1. Any keyboard LEDs on/off activity with capslock, numlock etc.?
2. CRT-Alt-Fx should change the desktop to a a different console. Try CRT-Alt-F1 for example.

Still no luck. I have tried new keyboard and mouse. So far have tried a Dynex model DX-MKB101 keyboard, a Dell L100 keyboard, a gigaware small retractable mouse, a logitech mouse and a microsoft mouse.

None of them works. The keyboards don't show any sign of life at all (lights don't go on with caps lock). All mice are optical and light up.

I checked the voltage as suggested and it looked like 5 volts.

The SD card image is the suggested raspbian wheezy download from the main page from a week ago. The keyboard worked during install, but has not since I booted into the GUI.

Lights on the Pi are Orange/Reddish PWR LED and flashing greenish one during boot up.

Is there something I should look for in the boot sequence logging?

Thanks.

check if the ethernet LEDs will light up if you connect an ethernet cable (connected to another ethernet device off course, not just the loose cable) after the PI has booted up.
If those LEDs do not come up you may have a defective PI (the LAN9512 chip may have stopped working, and thus the built in hub and ethernet interface).

Another cause may be bad power, "seems like 5V" really is unconvincing.

No, the lights don't go on when I plug in the ethernet. The same connection causes works on my laptop.

I said seems like 5 V, because I have an anlog meter and am not very familiar. It reads between 5 and 5 1/2 on the lower scale when the dial is turned to DC V 10. (I also tested a known 5V source and the reading was the same.)

If the keyboard worked when you first booted (before setup), try to reimage the SD card. Make sure you select the local, then the keyboard configuration in that order. This will change depending on where you are. I'm in the US and the default wheezy image is for a UK default keyboard layout which is different and not all US keyboards work this way. I use the standard US 104key layout. Leave the startup with X option off for now. Reboot with the keyboard and mouse plugged in and try to type at the command prompt. If the keyboard is still working, you should be able to log in. Take note of any error messages that may scroll by as the OS loads the devices. If the keyboard still works, type "lsusb" and look for your keyboard and mouse to be listed in the usb devices. If the mouse isn't listed, the device wasn't loaded on boot and won't be likely to work in X either. Try that, and let us know where you ended up.

OK, very interesting. First, the keyboard worked again in the installer. But I could not set an en-us locale. No matter what I selected, it always went back to the en_GB default.

Anyway, I then rebooted into the cmd line and ran lsusb. And it showed the logitech mouse and the dell keyboard. So i got optimistic and went for "startx"... and it all works now, mouse and keyboard.

Not sure what happened before but I seem to have a working system now.

Thanks so much for all the advice!
