Problem accessing new hard disk

Thu Mar 28, 2013 2:59 pm

Hi,

I've had a rummage through here, but haven't found anything that quite seems to cover my problem.

I've connected a new external Seagate hard disc to my Pi (the drive has its own power supply, but is routed via a powered hub).

I can cd into it and see that there are files (placed on there by Seagate), but it is read only.

Code: Select all

/media/Seagate Backup Plus Drive $ ls -lrt
total 204844

I've tried dmesg and I get :

And tailing /var/log/syslog get me :

So what to do ?

I've seen suggestions that formatting it to ext3 is the way to go (I don't expect to connect it up to a Windows box). What is the safest way of going about this (and would it cure the above problem ?

Thanks

it looks like it is happening because it isnt able to be written to by the pi. yah, formatting it to be able to write to it would be my suggestion. i made mine ext2, but you can do ext3 or ext4. whatever you wish. i made a quick guide on how i did my external usb drive if you want to check it out. it was to fix an error with owncloud. but it will work with your system too. its at:

Many thanks, that looks as though it has done the job.

Is there an easy way to rename the drive, it now has a name that takes up two thirds of a terminal window ?

(later edit)
Answer to the last question, Yes !

e2label /dev/sda1 <new name>

But you have to unmount it first.

Thanks. The first thing I did when I unpacked it was to book it up to a Win7 box (just to make sure it worked), and that it was fine.
