On Boot says Read-only File System

Sat Mar 23, 2013 7:14 pm

Hi,

Just installed the lastest Raspbian Wheezy on the SD Card and am trying to use Raspberry. When I boot it gives me the raspy-config screen. Whatever option I choose, fails due to the file-system being read only. Why is this? I have checked the directory settings and they do have write permission for Root. What is the password for Root and how do I get things to work.

I cannot even create a file under the "pi" account due to swap etc not being available.

Thanks.

AWP.

I can only imagine that something went wrong while creating the image on the SD-card.

Could it be that the SD card's tiny (often white) lock slider/switch is getting pushed into the "locked" ie. read only position during insertion? IIRC from the wiki, this has be reported as happening with some (makes of) cards.

Still running Raspbian Jessie or Stretch on some older Pi's (an A, B1, 2xB2, B+, P2B, 3xP0, P0W, 2xP3A+, P3B+, P3B, B+, and a A+) but Buster on the P4B's. See: https://www.cpmspectrepi.uk/raspberry_pi/raspiidx.htm

true, but unlike RiscOS, which actually can run completely from RAM, and can thus unlock the SD-card so it can be replaced by another one. All versions of Linux do not have that ability, and so completely ignore the write protect switch.

All operating systems for the Pi ignore the write protect switch on the system SD card. Because the wires from it are not connected to the SoC.

Hi All,

Thanks for your replies. The SD card I am using is a DANA ELEC High Speed, 4GB, SD Card. I had to put the Lock switch in the Lock position instead of the unlocked position. Once that was done it all worked fine. Not sure why, but it now works.

True, I was actually talking about the card insert switch, sorry for the confusion.
