At the instigation of 'Grumpyoldgit' I am pleased to announce Puppy will be bringing its unique slice to fruit raspberry.
Puppy on ARM is our stepping stone to getting Puppy Linux onto a future tablet, yet to emerge. Many of our developers are keen amateurs, programming mavericks and as diverse and unique as any kennel that includes an official crustacean (c'est moi).
Our initial aim will be to take Debian and trim it to Puppy specs and then use that to bootstrap from.

I have been using Puppy Linux for years and LOVE it.  I purchased the first OLPC "One Laptop Per Child" about four years ago and until the Puppy masters got Puppy running on it I didn"t use it much.  The OLPC officially delivered a Sugar Kid interface but later allowed booting into a bloated Fedora standard desktop.  Puppy is lean and mean but is still not lighting fast on the OLPC low end hardware.  Other than limited CPU  horsepower the version 1.0 OLPC only has 256MB of SDRAM as does the Raspberry Pi.  If you have at least 512MB of SDRAM Puppy Linux is a dream on almost any hardware even low end.  Sounds like NONE of the core Puppy Linux developers has gotten their hands on the Pi hardware yet (that is a real shame!).  The original idea of developing Puppy Linux was to run on outdated hardware and allow booting from USB/SDCH flash devices (even old flash devices that didn't support wear leveling -Puppy has always been able to cache the pending NAND writes).  Two of the real strong points is the capability to remaster custom versions of Puppy Linux and boot from anything the hardware will support.

I will be running Puppy on my Raspberry Pi as soon as it is available!

Is there a version of BBC BASIC which will run on Puppy Linux? I quite fancy the idea of turning a Pi into a mini-Beeb with Puppy underneath...

Hello from KF6SNJ. I did not that a version of Puppy was available for the Rasberry PI. Will it compile either DROS or Astromech-OS? I ask for that is why I chose to use the Debian version. However, I would love to use Puppy still.

Hi Lobster, nice to see you over on this side.
Finally downloaded the (480 MB ) Debian img for the Pi and tried it under QEMU.
Must say was not very impressed and found that not being root a real pain.
I believe that once Puppy is available for the Pi, a large percentage will use it as the default distro.

Mark (Antiloquax) is expecting his real Rpi hardware any day now and has a Qemu Puppi Arch that can be transitioned . . .

For Christmas/Holidays/Dec 2012 we will have had sufficient time to code, woof2 build, test in the kennels. shrink and optimise programs.

When Puppy comes to the party, it will turn the Raspberry Pi into a viable computer. Debian and Arch have created a great bootstrapping environment.

Puppy will offer support and simple documentation - easy enough for kids, penguin noobs, silver surfers, programming hackers from other dimensions and those on a fast track to their own projects.

We have no time requirement. The process will be ongoing.
Learn by doing. We have a minimalist core and a commitment to efficiency.

I have been using puppy on a usb for years when i am working on fixing computers as it is small and fast and gives me access to the file system easily. I would be very interested inlooking at puppy on my soon to arrive Pi! Looking forward to it.

Just want to share my enthusiasm with this project. I have been using Puppy a lot on different netbooks, and they've been flying! I would love to see Puppy Linux on the Raspberry Pi!

In agreement with the previous comment having tried running Puppy from a USB stick on my Netbook whilst waiting for the Raspberry Pi. It's certainly a speedy OS. I've just downloaded Barry's test release and got it up and running on a 4GB Sandisk card without problems. Just a note for anyone downloading via a Windows PC that you will need an extractor that supports the "'.xz" file extension for compressed files. Winrar didn't support it so I had to download another 'universal extractor' in order to then install via the Win32diskimager program.
