Raspberry as mobile chatserver

Wed Mar 20, 2013 12:44 pm

I am having this wild idea to turn my RaspberryPi into a mobile WiFi chatserver to use while driving my motorbike.

My Raspberry already runs Mumble to chat with friends while gaming. I was thinking:

Is it possible to install a dhcp package so the RaspberryPi acts as a WiFi router and hands out IP-addresses to connecting devices? (Devices: think smartphones running Mumble)
Those connecting devices will run Mumble and act as chatsystem for me and my friends while driving on my motorbike.

It's shouldn't be much effort to adjust the voltage of the bike battery to something to power the Raspberry.
Also the WiFi range doesnt have to be 100 meters or more, most of the trime we drive fairly close together.

Is this something possible? Or am I imagining things? Not driving until June, so got some time to work it out.

This would be possible through this guide:

You should be able to set up DHCP and set up the Pi as a access point for your buddies mobiles to connect. I'm not sure what sort of range you will get when driving.
