File server and cloud backup

I currently have 1 raspberry pi running raspbmc in my sons room to watch films off.

I want to get another raspberry pi and set it up downstairs to run 24/7 as it has low power usage connect my external hdd to it to stream films off instead on my xbmc pc downstairs.

Also would like to setup cloud backup to it as we'll from my phone etc to backup pics.

Can I get 1 raspberry pi to do both of these?

You might want to look at ownCloud to do this. It's a PHP web application that's similar to Dropbox in its functionality. You could use that to sync and manage files, and then set up a NAS or NFS share you could connect to from your raspbmc machine.

Would xbmc from other machines be able to see the content on the owncloud server and be able to stream off it.
