ar5523 wifi driver, installation and dependences question

Sun Mar 10, 2013 7:36 am

Hi, collegues.
I am trying to instal a wifi module ar5523 onto RPi, but
---------%<-----------------------

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~# dpkg  --force-depends -Ei /lib/modules/3.6.11+/ar5523-modules-3.6.11+_3.8~rc7.2_armhf.deb
...
The following packages have unmet dependencies:
 ar5523-modules-3.6.11+ : Depends: linux-image-3.6.11+ which is a virtual package.
The following actions will resolve these dependencies:
     Remove the following packages:
1)     ar5523-modules-3.6.11+
------%<----------------------------
while the kernel is the same:

Code: Select all

[email protected]:~# uname -a
Linux raspberrypi 3.6.11+ #371 PREEMPT Thu Feb 7 16:31:35 GMT 2013 armv6l GNU/Linux
And I am unable to find any packeges named linux-image-3.6.11+

Is there any way to install this package?

ar5523 is a driver which supports some Atheros chipsets.

I am at a loss to what you have downloaded, here is the Debian Page http://wiki.debian.org/ar5523 :roll:

When the USB Ethernet Adaptor is plugged in what exactly does lsusb recognise it as ?

It may be something like this "USB: 0CF3:0001 Atheros Communications, Inc. AR5523" !

Thank you for the answer!
Yep, all was done as described at that link. But final step is as I described.
lsusb:

Code: Select all

Bus 001 Device 002: ID 0424:9512 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 001: ID 1d6b:0002 Linux Foundation 2.0 root hub
Bus 001 Device 003: ID 0424:ec00 Standard Microsystems Corp.
Bus 001 Device 004: ID 2001:3a03 D-Link Corp. DWL-G132 (no firmware) [Atheros AR5523]
Distro is standard recommended distro. Now recompilnig kernel.

Code: Select all

# aptitude -t squeeze-backports install build-essential debhelper fakeroot module-assistant quilt subversion wget && exit
Acquire the driver source and device firmware:
$ svn co svn://svn.berlios.de/fullstory/ar5523/trunk/ ar5523
$ wget http://verein.lst.de/~hch/ar5523.tgz
$ tar xf ar5523.tgz ar5523/uath-ar5523.bin --strip 1
Build and install a driver source package:
$ cd ar5523
$ export QUILT_PATCHES="debian/patches"
$ quilt delete kcompat-3.5 && quilt delete kcompat-2.6.34
$ dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc
$ su
# dpkg -i ../ar5523-source*deb

USB: 2001:3A03 D-Link Corp. DWL-G132 (no firmware) [Atheros AR5523]

If you are using the latest Raspbian "wheezy" it is based of Debian Wheezy 7 ARMHF NOT SQUEEZE

http://wiki.debian.org/ar5523#Wheezy

""# aptitude -t squeeze-backports install build-essential debhelper fakeroot module-assistant quilt subversion wget && exit""

Now I have reinstalled all, but problem is still here.
How shold one can check sanity of installation?
aptitude remove build-essential debhelper fakeroot module-assistant quilt subversion wget
aptitude install build-essential debhelper fakeroot module-assistant quilt subversion wget
aptitude update
svn co svn://svn.berlios.de/fullstory/ar5523/trunk/ ar5523
wget http://verein.lst.de/~hch/ar5523.tgz
tar xf ar5523.tgz ar5523/uath-ar5523.bin --strip 1
cd ar5523
QUILT_PATCHES="debian/patches" quilt delete kcompat-3.5
dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc
# dpkg -i ../ar5523-source*deb
# m-a a-i ar5523

Code: Select all

dpkg: dependency problems prevent configuration of ar5523-modules-3.6.11+:
 ar5523-modules-3.6.11+ depends on linux-image-3.6.11+; however:
Package linux-image-3.6.11+ is not installed.

Did you fully update Raspbian "wheezy" prior to this issue ?

sudo su
apt-get update
apt-get dist-upgrade
sync
reboot

Troubles continue on new clean installation:
2013-02-09-wheezy-raspbian.zip
just updated from raspi-config

Code: Select all

# aptitude install build-essential debhelper fakeroot module-assistant quilt subversion wget && aptitude update
$ svn co svn://svn.berlios.de/fullstory/ar5523/trunk/ ar5523 && wget http://verein.lst.de/~hch/ar5523.tgz && tar xf ar5523.tgz ar5523/uath-ar5523.bin --strip 1 && cd ar5523 && QUILT_PATCHES="debian/patches" quilt delete kcompat-3.5 && dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc

$dpkg-buildpackage -us -uc
#m-a a-i ar5523

Bad luck, the kernel headers for the target kernel version could

If the running kernel has been shipped with the Debian
distribution, please install the package linux-headers-3.6.11+.
If your kernel source tree (or headers) is located in some
non-usual location, please set the KERNELDIRS environment

From the post: http://blog.eihis.com/?p=423
The link he provides is: http://blog.eihis.com/wp-content/upload ... _armhf.deb

EDIT:
From the stackexchange forum:
http://raspberrypi.stackexchange.com/qu ... tion-fault
If you are using the latest kernel (sudo apt-get update followed by sudo apt-get upgrade) then you should be able to use the following to pull the correct headers and symbol file from the version control system used to generate the builds in the first place:

Code: Select all

cd /usr/src
wget -O rpi-`uname -r`.tar.gz https://github.com/raspberrypi/linux/tarball/rpi-3.6.y
rm -rf raspberrypi-*
tar xzf rpi-`uname -r`.tar.gz
cd raspberrypi-*
KSRC=`pwd`
pushd /lib/modules/`uname -r`
rm source
rm build
ln -s ${KSRC} source
ln -s ${KSRC} build
popd
pushd /usr/src
rm linux-`uname -r`
rm linux
ln -s ${KSRC} linux-`uname -r`
ln -s ${KSRC} linux
popd
zcat /proc/config.gz > .config
make oldconfig
make modules_prepare
wget -O Module.symvers https://github.com/raspberrypi/firmware/raw/master/extra/Module.symvers

Hello everyone,
for the records I have now a WORKING setup with Dlink (D-Link) DWL-G132 [Atheros AR5523]
kernel version (uname -r) 3.10.25+ wheezy-raspbian up-to-date (april 16th 2014).

Made the trick installing firmware-atheros from repository:
deb http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy-backports main contrib non-free

===

sudo nano /etc/apt/sources.list

comment out
deb http://http.debian.net/debian/ wheezy-backports main contrib non-free

sudo apt-get update

sudo apt-get remove firmware-atheros (if previously installed)

sudo apt-get install firmware-atheros

sudo reboot

now lsusb does NOT shows DWL-G132 (no firmware) [Atheros AR5532]
BUT
Bus 001 Device 006: ID 2001:3a02 D-Link Corp. DWL-G132 [Atheros AR5523]

while iwconfig finally does its job.

Don't forget to restore previous apt-get sources afterward.

Enjoy!
