Edimax 7811 Un Kernel Panic

Thu Mar 07, 2013 1:13 am

Edimax 7811 Un is not fully compatible with my Raspberry Pi Model A.

It will work perfectly fine when i use --limit-rate = 150k with wget or if I use wondershaper wlan0 1500 1500 (also achieving max ~170k/s).

With unlimited bandwidth it will work ok for web browsing etc. As soon as I reach high network throughput (for example wget > 200k/s) the raspberry will hold with kernel panic.

The Edimax is the only device connected to the pi. Not yet tested with powered usb hub. (Will update information when tested. I also tried all advice on elinux but the problem persits)

This thread is intended to gather more feedback on experiences of other users with the 7811 Wifi dongle on current raspian/firmware Model A with different power sources.

I am perfectly able to stream rmtp through flvstreamer and omxplayer with the wondershaper wlan0 1500 1500 setting.

Interesting,

The kernel panic seems to be power related indeed. I can use the Edimax Wifi dongle full speed on a powered hub. Interesting because the Model A is not able here to power it by itself (with my power adapters at least). But if i really want to run it headless with no powered hub i am able to do so as well, i just have to reduce the bandwidth for example with wondershaper.
