PWM Audio Output Capability

Wed Mar 06, 2013 11:36 pm

Hello All

Potentially a stupid question, but the PWM Audio output on the Pi which goes to the 3.5mm Jack - what is this capable of driving, other than into an amplifier.

Is it capable of driving a small 8ohm (0.5W nominal) 18mm speaker directly (or 2 speakers I should say)?

Doesn't have to drive it 'awesomely', but if it can safely be connected that is the info I am wanting to know.

Thanks

The Pi on-board can barely drive a pair of headphones so passive speakers will not work at all (and yes I have tried it).
You'll need an amplifier circuit based on the TDA2822M or 2 x LM386 to get anything out of your speakers.
The other alternative is to use a USB audio dongle which won't be loud either but nevertheless much more audible.
