How long should a RPi Take to Boot from fresh?

Wed Mar 06, 2013 3:36 pm

Hi Guys.

James here.

I have a Model B RPi and need to know how long it takes for a RPi to boot from fresh.

Not sure if this is also included in the same issue but my monitor is a VGA based and I have a hdmi to VGA adaptor. When I start the pi up with the power cable, nothing comes up on the screen. The power LED is on red and above it (ACT) flashes green. That's it.

Any help / advice would be much appreciated.

James

About 60 seconds is a good indicator if you can't ssh in after that definite issue. Are you having trouble with the monitor? Check the verified HDMI to VGA adapters there are quite a few that won't work with the Pi http://elinux.org/RPi_VerifiedPeriphera ... rter_boxes

Of the order of 30 seconds to complete boot to login prompt.

If the green LED is flashing a repeated sequence that indicates an error. How many flashes?

You can check the boot by using the composite video port. I connect mine to my VCR. Text isn't very good, but I can see when the login prompt is displayed. I have noticed my boot times can very depending on which USB devices I have attached.

Boot time is very dependent on the speed rating and performance of the DS Card you are using. A Class 10 Card is MUCH faster than a Class 4 Card.

The class of an SD card is about sustained write speed in video applications :

https://www.sdcard.org/developers/overview/speed_class/

How long a Pi takes to boot is all about read speed, it is not defined by the class. They all read much faster than they write, in many cases a lower class will read faster than a higher class card.
My Sandisk class 4's will boot the latest Raspdian in 24 seconds. Using the perfomance tests on elinux : http://elinux.org/RPi_SD_cards#SD_card_performance

It writes at 5.3 MB/S and reads at 21.5 MB/S which puts it up with the best of those tested on read speed. A class 4 should have a minimum sustained write speed of 4 MB/S. How fast it reads isn't defined.
Don't judge Linux by the Pi.......

You have lots of answers to your stated question, but it feels like your problem is not a long boot, but something else?

I.e. after 5 minutes has it booted??

What OS are you using?

Where did you get the file from?

How did you image the flash card?
