RPi with HDD

Mon Mar 04, 2013 3:13 am

I've been trying to use my Transcend external hard drive with the Raspberry Pi but it isn't even picked up. I don't have access to/the money for a powered USB hub. The cord for the HD has two USB ports, could I possible connect one to a USB wall adaptor?

Thanks in advance,

Can't see why this should be a problem, although I must admit I've never done it! Caveat emptor.

A quick Google gives (for example) http://superuser.com/questions/448722/c ... ower-sourc some additional thoughts on the subject.

if your HD is externally powered then there should be no issues,
if you want to connect your RPi to an HD and other stuff a cheap powered hub will be the way to go
however to answer your question..
yes
if your wall adapter has two ports then use one to power the RPi and the other to power the HD with a Y cable and plug the other into the RPi [if you want to do it properly then it's probably best to "cut the red wire" on the cable from to the RPi - that way it gets the data and ground but no back power]
