Printing to Canon iP4700 Windows' share with CUPS

I am trying to set up CUPS to print to a Canon iP4700 on a Windows' share. There are a number of issues (in order of seriousness):

CUPS test pages (and any other GUI app print job) appear briefly in the Windows print queue, then disappear without printing. Plain text files print successfully using the lp command however.
If I set the paper size to A4 (the size in the printer), any print jobs are rejected at the Windows end as being not matched to the loaded paper. If I set Letter it accepts print jobs.
If configured to automatic paper selection, it invariably selects the rear feeder rather than the cassette. Explicitly selecting the cassette is OK.

Any ideas - especially with respect to printing from GUI apps?

Have exactly the same problems with IP 4950 printer. However I also get the paper selection problem with Windows 7, so this not specific to Raspberry
