OpenElec 2.99.3 - Internet Not Connected

Thu Feb 28, 2013 10:00 am

Hi,

I am a first time Raspberry Pi user (however I have quite a bit of experience in linux (Ubuntu, Mint etc.)) I installed OpenELEC 2.99.3 on an SD card (from my Ubuntu Machine to use in the Pi)

The system booted up fine, however there is no network connection (Wired Connection)
In the network information section I have the following:

Link: Connected
MAC Address: left this out for convenience
IP Address: 169.254.188.164
Subnet Mask: 255.255.0.0
Gateway: [blank]
Primary DNS: 127.0.0.1
Secondary DNS: [blank]
Internet: Not connected. Check Network Settings

My router (Netgear N300/DGN2200) does not show the device in the list of attached devices.
My router operates on 192.168.0.XXX for DCHP, and is set to assign addresses automatically.
The cable works as it is connected to a microserver in the same room at the moment, which works fine.

Seems to be a DHCP error. I have googled the error and found a number of pages, which generally have one or two posts, but no solutions:

No connection to the internet (169.254.x.x)

Please can someone try and help me reach a solution to this.
Would love to see a [Solved] somewhere in this thread ;)

Suggest that you try to narrow down the possibilities by temporarily putting the latest Raspian wheezey on the SD card. If that gets an IP address OK then there is no problem with your RPi hardware. If it doesn't get an IP address, it may be easier to troubleshoot as Raspian does have a console from which you can run diagnostics.

This is what I am busy doing. Will get around to it just now.
If I have the .img file on a Linux Machine, how do I write it to the SD card?

Hi.

I have installed the latest Rasbian Wheezy, and my problem has not been resolved.
When running ifconfig I get the following:

eth0
Link encap: Ethernet
MTU: 1500
RX Packets: 107 errors: 184 dropped: 92 ovveruns:0 carrier:0
TX Packets: 8 errors: 0 dropped: 0 ovveruns: 0 carrier: 0
collisions: 0 txqieielen: 1000

Why are there being dropped packets, I'm starting to assume the network chip on this RPi is dead, which would not be ideal. Are there any solutions to this problem?

Any other stats I can give which may help?

The chip cannot be completely dead as it is the same one which handles the two USB ports.

Are you able to measure the power supply voltage as described at http://elinux.org/R-Pi_Troubleshooting# ... r_problems ? Can you try another PSU?

TBH, I'm not expecting that power is the problem but the possibility needs to be eliminated.

I do have a multimeter so will try that.
I have borrowed an unused Raspberry Pi (seems newer, slightly different print on the board - ie. copyright)

I will measure the power on the board, I have some suspicion that it may be a power issue. I heard that the keyboard and ethernet are the first to malfunction in lack of power. I have two Wireless systems.

Microsoft Wireless Desktop 800 (this was giving issues, have read about this in numerous places so I stopped using this and pulled out my AData Wireless keyboard, which doesn't have the "multiple keypress problem" or "jittery keyboard" that so many people have written about. This could be the issue still as maybe it pulls too much power.

I don't have a powered USB hub so can't really test this, and no wired keyboard either, maybe I will have to take the plunge and buy one.

Power supplies I have are:
Raspberry Pi supplied adapter from RS Components (no current rating printed on it - think 1A)
Blackberry Charger: 0.7 amp
Garmin Charger: 0.5 amp
Garmin Charger: 1 amp.
Nokia Charger: 1.2 amp

[I was using the 1 amp garmin charger, and raspberry pi RS components one when the issues happened]

Thought of maybe using an old computer power supply and building a microUSB connector onto that. Those have a good couple of amps available.

I have read about a guy using a two amp glass fuse, bridging the polyfuse, and then he runs about 6 or so USB devices, including flash disks, wireless keyboard, wireless dongle etc.

If the power appears fine on the board though, I think I will try the borrowed raspberry pi with the same setup and see what happens.

It seems that from what I've read, problems can be generated from:
  • Bad USB cables
  • Insufficient Supply Power
  • Broken Component (more rare)
  • USB devices drawing too much power
What I've tried so far:
  • OpenELEC 2.99.3, 1A power supply, AData Wireless Desktop
  • Raspbian, 1A power supply, AData Wireless desktop

Power Supply good quality 1A or more

USB Devices plugged into a good quality Mains Power USB Hub (cheap USB Powered Hubs may back feed ie the red light is alight when no power is applied to USB Micro Socket)

I sound like a record but I had these issues and finally bit the bullet and bought a Belkin F5U234 Powered Hub, which has a 5V 2.1A power supply
http://www.belkin.com/uk/F5U234/p/P-F5U234

I use it to power my 256MB PI as well as a USB BT and WiFi Dongle.

My Keysonic ACK-540RF USB RF Keyboard receiver is plugged into the Pi.

No back feeding what-so-ever. Best ebay £9.00 I recently spent !
