Communicating with Pi

There wasn't really a suitable place to put this topic, so I put it here even though it's not 'basic'.

Is there any way of me communicating with my Pi without using a desktop computer or smartphone?
Because it needs to be conveniently portable but preferably not too expensive.
I just need to be able to type commands etc.

I would of thought a cheap second user Android smartphone or tablet would of sufficed ?

Not sure how you would communicate without having some device that can run a simple app like SSH. You've already eliminated computers and smartphones, and, I'm assuming, variations like tablets, so what's left?

How about sending an email from a non-smart phone?

Either standard email (even many older phones supported this) or text-to-email (see http://lifehacker.com/5506326/how-can-i ... xt-message)

You can then use fetchmail on the Pi to check for new mail and then read using appropriate code.
