where can i find packag(es) with common linux command

hi
good afternoon. me again. my problem is, mostely when i want to run a command (i am a terminal user)
--> the command isn't found. just now i have a problem with VLC. VLC run good but i want to load a DVD - an error comes up (same in the filemanager i tryed).
--> eject --> command not found. is there a general package with most commen comands for Pi available or for my actual problem - which package comprised the eject command.

Usually the distro will have done the basic installation for you, but of course their criteria/needs may differ from your own.

To search then

Code: Select all

sudo apt-cache search eject
You'll get a list of 20 or so packages, form which you can hopefully make an informed selection.

thanks a lot for that hint - "search" is exactly what i need ( i found it :-) ). you can't belive i am a long time unix/linux user, but mostely downloaded "tar.gz" files and did the install by myself.
but the option "search" is what i have needed.

let's talk about kernel and c/assembler development and i bet you ain't know all the options of "ls".
have a look at the date on the attached picture (and this wasn't) my first linux. i started with minix on a 128kb memory olivetti m 24. :mrgreen:

Try getting a printer to run on SUSE 1995 ! Nightmare task ! *LOL*, 12 years later it still was !
