New 512M version Pis - disk problems

Sat Feb 23, 2013 5:36 pm

Hi all,

I own 3 Pis, 2 original 256M versions and one new 512M version via the kickstarter project.

I have a Fedora 17 boot SD, and three 2.5" external hard disks, aim being to boot from SD card to HD.

I was today attempting to tar the latest SD image to hard disk using the new version board. It lasted from 10 secs to 1 min before falling over with IO errors, and the kernel remapped the disk from sda to sdb.

I tried this with two hubs and all three hard disks, the result was the same..

Next I swapped out the Pi for the older 256M version. Same PSU, Hub, HD etc ONLY the Pi was changed. and 2G tarred up without 1 error.

The Pi only connects to the world via on USB port to a 4 port hub with a 3A PSU in all cases.

Anyone else seen this, or have I just got a duff 512M Pi?

John

When was there a Kickstarter for R Pi?

Anyway, on to the main topic here. There is always a chance you got a deffective unit, however, I have found that the 512 MB to be very sensitive to two things. First is overclocking, in particular overclocks to anything other than the ARM core. Second is having a good quality power supply. The power supply I used with my 256 MB models for months would cause SD card corruption with my 512.

Hi Jessie,

Firstly the kickstarter was actually for MagPi ( The Pis magazine ) http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/the ... ?ref=email

Secondly, I am a server guy, no overclocking and the PSU is the one shipped by ModMyPi (Hardware suppliers for the Kickstarter).

I also have since used a 12A lab supply, same result..

So it sounds like you answered you own question then. Return it.

I'm going to move this thread into the troubleshooting section of the forums. Look for the copy there.

EDIT: Sorry I didn't intend to lock this thread only the original. It is now unlocked.
